Josh Wins Handicap Tournament

The final of this long-running and very popular tournament took place at the Club on 21^st April. The final protagonists were Josh Smith (-30) and Brian Ellen (-15), so there was a 15-point difference in handicaps, but a 40-year difference in ages!

The match was close and entertaining, with excellent squash and some amazing rallies. Overall, however, Josh had too much mobility and fire power and took the title.

It is an indication of the improvement in Josh’s game that he has won this tournament, despite a much stiffer handicap, after winning the Plate contest last year.

As expected, there has been the odd grumble about relative handicaps, but – as a tribute to the handicapper (Tournament Secretary, Andy Smith) – many friendly matches have been played and many ties at Tuesday’s social squash have been played using the handicap rules.

An excellent tournament – well done father and son – Andy (organiser) and Josh (winner)!

Jenny Wins Ladies' Tournament
After being rescheduled on more than one occasion, the final of the Ladies' Tournament was scheduled for 21^st April, between Jenny Hipsey and Sarah Giles. In the event, Sarah was injured and unable to play, so Jenny won by default.

However, as several spectators had gathered to watch this final and the final of the Handicap Tournament, Jessica Warman stepped up to the plate to give Jenny a game and give the crowd a match to watch.

Jess seemed to have a clear mission – she was very focussed and playing excellent squash, giving a slightly nervous Jenny very little chance in the first two games. In the third, however, Jenny settled and began to find a chink or two in Jess’s armour.

Jenny won the third and then the fourth, to make the match wide open again. However, Jenny now had more momentum than her opponent and fought through in the fifth. She thus won the match as well as having claimed the title, emphasising her Champion status.
